Kevin Giancola Notches Third Connecticut PGA Championship Title
Today at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
Completes Wire to Wire Victory with Third Consecutive Round Under Par

(MIDDLEFIELD, Conn.) – Kevin Giancola, the director of instruction at the Golf Quest Family Sports Center, shot 71 today, his third consecutive round under par at the storied Robert Trent Jones Sr. course at Lyman Orchards Golf Club, to complete his wire to wire victory in the 79th Connecticut PGA Championship. Giancola’s 7-under par 209 total was five shots clear of Evergreene Golf Center’s Frank Leja Jr. (72-214), the only other of the 88 PGA Professionals competing to break par for the 54-hole championship.

Kevin GiancolaGiancola began the final round with a 4-shot lead and proceeded to birdie two of his first three holes to extend his lead to six. Despite giving back three strokes by making a double bogey on hole five and bogey on hole six, he got himself back on track with a birdie on hole eight.

Giancola collects the $5,000 first place prize. Leja takes home $3,000 as the runner up.

With the victory, his third title since 2003, Giancola can now lay claim to the moniker as PGA Professional Player of the Decade in the Connecticut Section. Since 2001, Giancola has recorded eight individual section championship titles and four Player of the Year crowns during the span, more than any other PGA Member in both categories. He now takes a commanding lead in the 2010 Player of the Year of point standings with two point tournaments remaining on the schedule.

“I don’t think anybody could beat Kevin today,” said an obviously dejected Leja. “I had one bad stretch of three bogeys but even if I parred them, it wouldn’t have been enough.”

Brian Keiser of Wethersfield Country Club was tied for second with Leja heading into the final round, but fell back with a 76.

Tom DelRosso of Black Hall Club fired a 69, the low round of the day to move into a tie for third place at 217 with Tom Gleeton of Country Club of Waterbury, and defending champion Fran Marrello of Canaan Country Club. Each player earns $2,000.

Presenting sponsors for the championship were Cleveland Golf, Srixon, E-Z-GO, Mohegan Sun, and the PGA TOUR. Mohegan Sun has been a sponsor since 1998, and this year marks the tenth consecutive year for Cleveland Golf.

The championship was also supported by Ash City, Gentleman Jack, and Billy Casper Golf, which manages both golf courses at Lyman Orchards and played a part in the renovation program that was crafted by the Lyman family and Mark Mungeam of Mungeam Cornish Golf Design.
